Which one first?
If you already know the piping is old galvanized steel and you are planning the work, start with the cost calculator. It gives the typical range for a whole rowhouse, twin or detached house, works out the L&I permit fee from your fixture count, and applies the Philadelphia rule on where PEX is allowed and where metallic pipe is required.
If you are seeing brown water, weak flow or leaks, or have a Water Department notice, and are not sure what it means, start with the 10-question check. Several of its results say to check the street side or the problem area first, because the service line, a valve or the water heater can cause the same signs as old piping.
What the tools do not do
- They do not ask for a phone number or email to show a result.
- They do not see inside walls or say whether any piping is safe.
- They do not give a price for a partial repipe, a 2 to 4 unit, mixed-use or apartment building; those are priced after a walk-through.
- They do not say whether a property qualifies for a Water Department or utility program.
- They cover the water supply piping, not sewer or drain lines.
